Look for public enemy No. 1 when midseason scouting

Scouting soybeans (or corn) in summer heat and humidity isn't at the top of everyone's list of fun things to do, but it's invariably worth the effort. There is always a long list of things to watch for, like weed escapes, insect pests and disease outbreaks. Abnormally dry weather, as much of the state is suffering through, can bring added pest challenges that warrant increased vigilance — for example, spider mites and grasshoppers.

In addition to good pest management against the challenges mentioned above, scouting beans can offer a few more benefits. Farmers and agronomists who spend a lot of time in the field — and these are the folks that taught me more about scouting than any class or book — often look beyond bugs, weeds and diseases.
